RV Furniture
During our fulltime RV days, we lived in two different tiny homes on wheels. The first being a total remodel. We had to completely furnish it. From the RV mattresses to the couch, we purchased all of the RV furniture. Our second RV was brand new and came with all of the standard RV furniture including recliners, dining chairs, sofa beds, etc. Unfortunately over time, RVing with cats took a toll on our furniture so we had to make additional purchases. It’s safe to say, we’ve had our fair share of experience with RV furniture!
Are you looking to furnish a camper? Need to replace a couch? Looking to upgrade the mattress? Here is everything you need to know about RV furniture!
Types of RV Furniture
RV furniture comes in different types, and each type serves a specific purpose in your mobile home. Here are the most common types of RV furniture:
RV Sofas and Couches
Sofas and couches are great additions to RV living rooms, providing a comfortable seating area for you and your guests. When choosing a sofa or couch, look for one that is lightweight and has a pull-out bed for extra sleeping space. If you have an RV with a second bedroom, a sofa sleeper can also be used there to provide additional sleeping space at night but keep the space open and usable during the day.
RV Recliners and Chairs
Recliners and chairs are perfect for RVers who want to relax after a long day of driving. Look for chairs that have a swivel base and a reclining backrest for maximum comfort. Again, the recliner in our Grand Design was my favorite place to sit. Not only did they layout but had heating and massage options as well!
RV Beds and Mattresses
Beds and mattresses are essential RV furniture pieces, providing a comfortable place to sleep at night. When choosing a bed or RV mattress, look for one that is lightweight and compact, but still provides ample support for your back. Even if you are purchasing a new rig that comes with a mattress, consider upgrading to a new mattress because what comes stock isn’t usually the most comfortable.
RV Tables and Desks
Tables and desks are important RV furniture pieces, providing a workspace for RVers who work remotely. Look for tables and desks that are lightweight and foldable, making them easy to store when not in use. We also had a desk in our second bedroom that provided the perfect spot for our son to roadschool.
Choosing RV Furniture
Before purchasing RV furniture, it is important to consider a few factors to ensure you get the right pieces for your mobile home.
Size and Space
One of the most important factors to consider when choosing RV furniture is the size and space available in your mobile home. RVs are generally smaller than regular homes, so you need to choose furniture that can fit in the limited space available. Measure the available space carefully and choose furniture that fits comfortably without taking up too much space. When buying furniture for our first fifth wheel, we did our diligence to ensure we purchased a couch that not only met our family’s needs but fit our tiny space. It felt like a real life Tetris game!
Weight and Durability
Another important factor to consider when choosing RV furniture is weight and durability. RV furniture needs to be lightweight and durable because of the constant movement and vibrations while driving. Choose furniture made of lightweight materials like aluminum or composite materials that are sturdy enough to withstand the bumps and jolts of the road. Furniture made for RVs is made from life on the road but if you are buying furniture that isn’t necessarily built for RVs, make sure you know its weight and how that plays into your GVWR.
Comfort and Style
Comfort and style are also important factors to consider when choosing RV furniture. Since you’ll be spending a lot of time in your mobile home, it’s important to choose furniture that is comfortable and ergonomic. Look for furniture that provides ample back support and is made of breathable materials to prevent sweating. If comfort and style don’t seem to go hand in hand with the furniture you are looking at, determine what is most important for you. For example, I was never a fan of the look of the oversized, light up recliners in our Grand Design, but they definitely provided the most comfortable spot in the rig!
Price and Budget
Price and budget are also important factors to consider when choosing RV furniture. RV furniture can range from affordable to expensive, depending on the quality, brand, and materials used. Set a budget for your furniture and stick to it to avoid overspending. Look for RV furniture on sale as well as used RV furniture to save on cost.
Materials Used in RV Furniture
Materials play a big role in the overall look, durability, and comfort of the furniture. Here are the most common materials used in RV furniture:
Leather and Vinyl
Leather and vinyl are popular materials used in RV furniture upholstery. They are durable, easy to clean, and look stylish in any RV interior. However, they may not be suitable for hot climates as they can become sticky and uncomfortable to sit on. Also, not safe from scratching pets!
Fabric Upholstery
Fabric upholstery is another popular option for RV furniture. It is comfortable, breathable, and comes in a variety of colors and patterns to suit any RV interior. However, it can be harder to clean and may not be as durable as leather or vinyl.
Wood and Metal
Wood and metal are commonly used in RV furniture frames and legs. They are sturdy and can withstand the constant movement and vibrations of an RV. However, they can be heavy, so make sure to choose lightweight options if possible.
Replacement RV Furniture
If your RV furniture is worn out or damaged, it may be time for a replacement. When choosing replacement RV furniture, make sure it fits the available space in your RV and is compatible with any existing furniture or fixtures. Make sure the new furniture is comfortable to sit or sleep on. Remember, RV furniture needs to be lightweight and durable. And lately, take installation into consideration. Don’t buy a replacement couch that won’t fit through the RV'‘s front door!
Used RV Furniture
Used RV furniture can be a cost-effective solution for those looking to update or replace their existing furniture. Places such as Facebook Marketplace and Craigslist are great for finding used items. Just like with replacement RV furniture, make sure the used furniture is compatible with the available space in your RV. Check the dimensions, and make sure it will fit and function properly in your rig. While used RV furniture may not be brand new, it can still be comfortable and stylish. Look for furniture that fits your personal style and is still in good condition. If the cushions are worn out or the fabric is outdated, consider reupholstering or replacing them.
Maintenance and Cleaning Tips for RV Furniture
Proper maintenance and cleaning of your RV furniture is essential to keep it in good condition for a long time. Without proper care, RV furniture can become worn out, stained, or damaged over time. This can result in costly repairs or replacements, which can be a hassle when you are on the road.
Vacuum and Dust Regularly
Dirt, dust, and debris can accumulate quickly in an RV, especially if you are traveling frequently. Regularly vacuum and dust your RV furniture to keep it clean and prevent buildup.
Clean Up Spills Immediately
Spills can happen in an RV, and it's important to clean them up immediately to prevent staining or damage to the furniture. Use a clean cloth to blot up any spills, and then clean the area with a mild cleaning solution.
Use Appropriate Cleaning Solutions
When cleaning your RV furniture, use cleaning solutions that are appropriate for the material of the furniture. For example, leather furniture may require a different cleaning solution than fabric furniture. Be sure to read the labels on your cleaning products and follow the manufacturer's instructions.
Avoid Harsh Chemicals
Harsh chemicals can damage RV furniture, especially if it is made of delicate materials. Avoid using bleach, ammonia, or other harsh chemicals on your RV furniture.
Protect Furniture from Sunlight and Heat
Sunlight and heat can fade and damage RV furniture over time. Keep your RV furniture out of direct sunlight and use window coverings to protect it from UV rays. If possible, park your RV in a shaded area to keep it cool.
Store Furniture Properly
If you are storing your RV for an extended period of time, it's important to store the furniture properly to prevent damage. Cover furniture with a protective cover, and avoid storing heavy items on top of it.
