Best Sunscreen for Kids

Sun protection is a big deal for our family of five. My kids are fair-skinned, we spend a lot of time outdoors year-round, and in the past year, I went through a very scary Melanoma diagnosis and removal. I did not take sun protection seriously in my youth and I don’t plan on making that same mistake for my three kiddos.

Through my sun protection journey, I’ve done a lot of research and tried a lot of kid’s sunscreens.

What I’ve learned is most important when it comes to sunscreen for kids is:

  1. It protects them from the sun, duh.

Mineral sunscreens that include zinc oxide or titanium dioxide offer the best protection against both UVA and UVB rays. A broad-spectrum sunscreen with SPF 40 or higher is ideal.

  2. It’s water and sweat resistant.

When my kids are in the sun, they are often wet and/or sweaty. No point in screening them up if it’s just going to be washed away!

  3. It’s easy to apply.

Not one child on the planet enjoys being sunscreened. Application must be as quick and seamless as humanly possible. Better yet, the older kids should be able to apply it to themselves.

Based on my extensive research and personal trials, tribulations, and successes, here are the best sunscreens for kids!

Blue Lizard Kids Sunscreen Lotion SPF 50+

Blue Lizard checks all of the boxes when it comes to great sunscreen. It is what I use on myself and what I most trust for protecting my kids from the sun. Since being diagnosed with Melanoma and getting really serious about sun protection, I am proud to say that I nor my kids have had a sunburn thanks in part to Blue Lizard sunscreen. Blue Lizard Kids Sunscreen is not greasy and even though it has Zinc Oxide, which we love, it rubs in easily and doesn’t leave a thick white layer on your skin.

  • Mineral active Zinc Oxide provides broad spectrum protection

  • Contains no Oxybenzone and no Octinoxate to help protect delicate coral reefs

  • Water resistant and sweat resistant

  • Paraben-free and fragrance-free

While we use the tube of Blue Lizard for full body protection, the kids carry a stick version of this sunscreen in their backpack or daypack to easily reapply if they aren’t with me or just need a quick touch up on their face.

Sun Protective Clothing for Kids

best kids sunscreen - sun shirt

Besides a good sunscreen, I have found UV protection clothing to be extremely helpful in keeping my kids from getting sunburns. When we are directly exposed to the sun for long periods doing things like paddleboarding and boating, a sun shirt goes a really long way.

Kids Sunscreen FAQs

Can I use spray sunscreen for kids?

No, you should not use spray sunscreen on kids. While they may be convenient, spray sunscreens pose several risks for children. They can be inhaled, leading to respiratory issues, and accidentally ingested, causing digestive problems. Additionally, spray sunscreens may not provide even coverage, leaving children vulnerable to sunburn. Instead, opt for lotion or cream sunscreens that are easier to apply evenly and less likely to be inhaled or ingested.

What SPF should you use on kids?

For kids, it's recommended to use a sunscreen with an SPF of at least 30. This will provide adequate protection against the sun's harmful rays. However, if your child has very fair skin or will be spending extended periods in the sun, you might consider using a sunscreen with an SPF of 45 or higher. Remember to reapply sunscreen every two hours or after swimming or sweating.

What is the best sunscreen for kids swimming?

For kids swimming, opt for a water-resistant sunscreen with a high SPF. A mineral-based sunscreen with broad-spectrum protection is ideal for sensitive skin. Look for paraben-free and fragrance-free options that are easy to apply. Remember to reapply sunscreen every two hours or after swimming or sweating. Any of the kids’ sunscreens mentioned above are great options!

What is the best sunscreen for a kid’s face?

For kids' faces, a gentle, non-greasy sunscreen is ideal. Mineral-based sunscreens are often a good choice for sensitive skin. Look for formulas that are broad-spectrum, paraben-free, and fragrance-free. Water-resistant options are beneficial for swimming or sweating. Remember to apply sunscreen generously to your child's face, including their ears, nose, and lips, and reapply every two hours or after swimming or sweating. I love a sunscreen stick for little faces as it’s easy to apply.
