Travel Gifts for Kids

Travel Gifts for Kids

Whether you’re taking a weekend road trip or heading overseas for an extended vacation, equipping kids with the right “stuff” can make all the difference. When we traveled full-time with two kids, gifts were tricky. We wanted to get them gifts they enjoy but also gifts that travel well. If you are looking for travel gifts for a little adventurer in your life, look no further. Here are our favorite travel gifts for kids - based on our first-hand experiences!

Top Travel Gifts for Kids

Instant Camera

Let your child’s imagination and inner photographer run wild - whether you are traveling or at home. My daughter received an instant print camera as a gift and it quickly became, and has remained, one of her favorite things. Not only does she absolutely love taking and displaying her pictures, I love them! The retro look of the photos is nostalgic and look great hanging in her room. We opted for the Fujifilm Instax Mini 12 Instant Camera which is easy to use, durable, and comes in a variety of fun colors. It also comes with a carrying case and strap making it perfect for on the go.

Walkie-Talkies

While RVing full-time, many times the kids wanted to run around the campground, go to the playground, and explore with new friends. To feel comfortable letting the kids out of eyesight, we used walkie-talkies to stay in contact. Even now at home when not traveling, the walkie-talkies come in handy, and are fun, on a regular basis. The kids’ walkie-talkies allow them a little freedom while giving me the peace of mind of being able to communicate with them! Enjoy camping? We sure do, and the walkie-talkies are great for the whole family when we don’t have cell service! We have three, rechargeable, long-distance walkie-talkies that are good quality and easy for the kids to use.

Legos

The problem with a lot of toys is they are fun and exciting for about five minutes and then the child is over it. With an open-ended toy such as Legos, this isn’t (always) the case! Legos are a great travel gift for kids of all ages because they are small, light, and can be played with in different ways over and over again. Themed kits are great for plane rides as they will keep the child engaged for a long stretch of time. Classic kits are perfect for an extended trip as they encourage kids to use their imagination more and the play possibilities are endless. Have younger kids? Duplos are wonderful for children under four years old.

Play-Doh

play doh for travel with kids

Play-Doh is a delightful travel companion for kids, offering portability, (somewhat) mess-free fun, and boundless creative opportunities. Being lightweight and compact makes it easy to pack. Like Legos, Play-Doh's allure also extends far beyond the initial few minutes. To maximize the Play-Doh fun, make sure to have a variety of colors and even consider pros and toys!

Mad libs

I remember Mad Libs being the funniest thing when I was a kid. Turns out they are still hilarious because my kids love them! Mad Libs are a great gift for traveling kiddos given their size and entertainment value. Not to mention, they are educational too! Participants get to brush up on their parts of speech and expand their vocabulary while having a blast and being silly.

Travel Bingo

I think I’ve lost count of the number of times I’ve heard those dreaded words while road tripping with little ones: “Are we there yet?”. While travel bingo won’t completely solve boredom in the car, it’s one of the items I’ve found to make a big difference! Players are given bingo cards featuring various items or landmarks commonly found out the car window, such as road signs, buildings, or types of vehicles. As travelers spot these items, they mark them off on their cards in an attempt to complete a row or column. Travel bingo not only keeps passengers engaged during long trips but also encourages observation and a sense of pride. Bonus tip - bring treats to give out as prizes! Check out all of the best games for family game night!

Travel Journal

When I’ve taken my kids out of school to travel, the only homework they get is to keep a travel journal. What a genius idea to keep them practicing writing, spelling, and comprehension of the world around them! Even when not assigned by a teacher, journaling while traveling is fun and the perfect way to keep those memories long after the trip is over. A cute journal keeps little writers engaged and enthusiastic.

Magnetibook

Magnetic books are an excellent travel gift for kids, thanks to their combination of entertainment and convenience. These cardboard books feature magnetic pieces that adhere to the pages, allowing young minds to engage in interactive storytelling and imaginative play. Since the pieces are magnetic, they are less likely to get lost, making them ideal for on-the-go adventures. Whether it's a captivating story, a learning activity, or a creative playset, magnetic books keep children entertained during long journeys.

Uno

My kids never really liked the classic card games for kids. Old Maid, Go Fish, no thanks. One game they’ve been excited to play since they were young is Uno. Uno is simple enough for little kids to understand and is fun for the whole family. And, what’s easier to travel with than a deck of cards?! I like the tin case version as it won’t fall apart while on the go.

Tablet

travel tablet for kids

Let’s not beat around the bush. The more effective way to keep kids entertained while traveling is with a screen. It doesn’t need to be the answer 100% of the time, but if both you and them need to relax and get a moment of peace while traveling, just let it happen. When my kids use their tablets, they don’t just watch movies and shows, they also play games and read. They even have access to their school’s digital apps and play math games! An Amazon Fire is a great option that has all of the functionality you’re likely to need and won’t break the bank.

Nintendo Switch

Another screen that keeps my kids (and husband) entertained while traveling is the Nintendo Switch. Not only is it perfect for trips, but its unique design allows for both at-home and on-the-go gaming. The robust library of family-friendly games, ranging from adventurous journeys to educational options, ensures that, no matter your little one’s interests, there are games they will love. The Switch promotes social interaction with its multiplayer functionality, allowing siblings or friends to join in the fun. With its durable construction and compact size, the Nintendo Switch is a practical and enjoyable gift that ensures hours of entertainment, making it an excellent choice for young travelers.

Travel Gifts for Baby (and Parents)

Traveling with babies can be hard. But never have I looked back on my adventures with baby and thought, I wish I didn’t do that. 10/10 times it’s been #worthit. To make life a little easier while on the go with tiny tots, here are the best travel gifts for babies and parents.

Portable Sound Machine

Good sleep is priceless, especially while traveling. Keep baby snoozing amidst the noises of hotel rooms, vacation rentals, or even camping with a portable sound machine. The rhythmic sounds create a comforting atmosphere that promotes relaxation and a sense of routine, making it easier for babies to settle down in different environments. With adjustable volume settings, timers, and easy portability, a portable sound machine is a thoughtful and practical gift that enhances the quality of sleep for both baby and parents during their travels.

SlumberPod

Did I mention how important sleep is while traveling with a baby? The SlumberPod is an exceptional travel gift for parents with babies, offering a private and cozy sleep space wherever they go. This innovative blackout tent is designed to fit over standard travel cribs, creating a secluded environment that shields babies from light and distractions. The SlumberPod is not only good for blocking out light but also helps muffle ambient sounds.

Fabric Travel High Chair

I didn’t know these existed until my third child. I just held my first two babies while eating in vacation rentals and places that don’t offer highchairs. Not ideal. Fabric travel high chairs offer adjustable straps and a universal fit, making them adaptable to various chair sizes and ensuring a safe and stable perch for little ones at any dining table. This portable high chair is crafted from durable and easily washable fabric, providing a comfortable and secure seating solution for babies or toddlers during travel. Its compact design allows for hassle-free packing, making it an ideal companion for road trips, flights, or restaurant visits. With its lightweight and foldable nature, the travel high chair becomes an indispensable tool for parents seeking a hygienic and familiar seating option while navigating the challenges of travel with their young ones.

Benefits of Travel Gifts for Kids

Traveling with kids can be both exciting and challenging, and choosing the right gifts for them can significantly enhance the overall experience. Thoughtfully selected travel gifts offer a range of benefits that go beyond keeping children entertained. Here are some key advantages:

  • Engagement during travel: Travel-friendly gifts keep kids entertained during long journeys, whether by car, plane, or train. This not only helps pass the time but also minimizes restlessness.

  • Minimizing stress: New environments and travel disruptions can sometimes be overwhelming for children. The right gifts act as distractions, providing comfort and a sense of familiarity in unfamiliar settings.

  • Educational value: Many travel gifts are designed to be both fun and educational. Games, books, and interactive toys can stimulate a child's curiosity and contribute to their learning experiences while on the road.

  • Association with adventures: Travel gifts become a tangible reminder of the journeys undertaken. Children often form strong connections with these items, turning them into cherished keepsakes that evoke positive memories of family adventures.

  • Peace of mind for parents: Well-chosen travel gifts can contribute to a smoother travel experience for parents. When kids are engaged and content, parents can better focus on navigating travel logistics without the added stress of managing restless children.

  • Personalized accessories: Gifts like personalized backpacks or travel-themed accessories can foster a sense of independence in children. Having their own special items encourages responsibility and a feeling of being part of the travel experience.

  • Versatility: Travel gifts that are versatile and adaptable to different settings ensure that they remain enjoyable throughout the journey. Consider items that can be used in various travel scenarios, from hotel rooms to outdoor excursions.

  • Pre-travel excitement: Introducing travel gifts before the trip can build anticipation and excitement in children. Knowing they have special items for the journey adds an extra layer of joy to the overall travel experience.

How to Choose Travel-Friendly Gifts for Kids

Selecting the right travel gifts for kids involves more than just considering their preferences; practicality and suitability for travel are equally crucial. Here are key criteria to keep in mind when choosing travel-friendly gifts for young adventurers:

  • Compact and lightweight. Opt for gifts that are compact and lightweight, minimizing the impact on luggage space. Portable items are not only convenient to carry but also leave room for other travel essentials.

  • Durable materials. Travel can expose items to more wear and tear than usual. Choose gifts made from durable materials that can withstand the rigors of the road, ensuring they remain intact and functional throughout the journey.

  • Versatility. Select gifts that can be used in various travel environments. Versatile items provide entertainment and comfort whether you're in a hotel room, on a plane, or exploring the outdoors.

  • Easy to clean. Kids and mess often go hand in hand. Opt for gifts that are easy to clean, either with removable and washable covers or materials that resist stains and spills. This makes maintaining cleanliness during travel more manageable.

  • Safety features. Prioritize safety by choosing gifts with child-friendly designs and age-appropriate features. Ensure that small parts are securely attached, and materials used are non-toxic and safe for kids.

  • Entertainment value. Look for gifts that offer sustained entertainment value. Items that can captivate a child's interest for an extended period contribute to a more enjoyable travel experience for both the child and their companions.

  • Battery life. If selecting electronic gadgets or toys, pay attention to battery life. Opt for items with long-lasting batteries or those that can be easily recharged to avoid disruptions during travel.

  • Collapsible or foldable design. Gifts that can be collapsed or folded are ideal for maximizing storage space. This feature is particularly valuable when packing and repacking during the trip.

  • Positive Reviews. Before making a final decision, check reviews and recommendations from other parents or trusted sources. Positive feedback can offer insights into how well a particular travel gift has performed in real-world scenarios.
